Shaw’s cowfish

Aracana aurita

Chordata – Osteichthyes

Shaw’s cowfish belong to the boxfish family. Unlike most other bony fishes, boxfish have an outer covering of large, thick bony plates, that provide a protective armour against predators. Because of this armour, boxfish cannot swim very fast to hunt, so they feed by blowing a jet of water at the sand to expose prey hidden beneath.

Boxfish are one of the bony fish families that display sexual dimorphism. This means that you can tell the difference between males and females by the colours, patterns and markings on their bodies.
